Years ago, when their parents would give them something new to eat, my little Russian nieces would ask, “Is it useful, or delicious?” (You must read this with a Russian accent for full effect.)

By useful, they meant nutritious. Apparently, to their young minds, these were mutually exclusive categories. Their parents would often respond “It’s useful and delicious.”

When I thought of putting together a site for places, ideas or things I find interesting, ingenious, beautiful or tasty, I remembered their simple taxonomy, and thought how it applies to much more than just food…
